Singapore Zoo and Night Safari

One of the most often recommended things to do in Singapore is the Zoo and specifically the “Nght Safari”. To be sure not to miss anything, we did both ($22US) and we decided that both is too much. Our recommendation is to do one of the two - you’ll see more animals at the Zoo during the day and it has very impressive collection – from White Bengal Tigers to Manatees to Pygmy Hippos to Black Spitting Cobras.

After a long day of animal watching, the night safari was interesting but more about event production than the animals from our perspective. It includes a “night show” complete with campy humor, a tram ride (done in a dramatic whisper so as not to bother the nocturnal animals) and expensive food and drinks. But, you aren’t melting in the Singapore sun and it is quite entertaining.

Most fascinating for me was the Polar Bear. I had seen one before but this one is quite special, mostly due to its location. You see, it is a POLAR bear that is living about 60 miles from the equator. Surely there is no polar bear so far from home. Yet, this polar bear even gave birth to a cub… 60 miles from the equator.

That's the saddest thing I've seen in a while. Polar bears belong in the arctic, not a zoo in Singapore. I'm very anti-zoo, myself, so I'm not particularly down with taking endangered animals out of their natural habitat for our amusement.

It looks as if you purchased a camera? What kind.

Did you get a replacement camera? What kind? I was slightly amused to read about your Pentax meeting its demise. I had a similar problem wtih mine a few weeks ago when the lens cover shattered, but I'm hoping Pentax will be able to fix it.

Yes, got a new camera! :) It's actually a replacement for the Pentax Optio WP that I had before. It's nice to be back at it. Darren, I think zoo's are sometimes sad too, but I also think they play a significant role in education. I think it would be even more sad for the bears to continue to decline and for the general public to not understand or even be aware that they are endangered- and that they could help in some way. I don't think it's about amusement really.

According to a report in a local newspaper on Sep 7, 2006: The Singapore Zoo will no longer import animals from the Arctic, following concerns raised by an animal welfare group about the zoo's resident polar bears, Sheba and her son Inuku. http://www.todayonline.com/articles/140998.asp
