We've been thinking/taling a lot about what sorts of gadgets we'll have on the trip. We're both hoping to pack light and in carry-on size bags.

Sachiko is much more on the side of less gadgets and I'm wanting more. We could make-do with a cell phone and a point and shoot camera, really. But, I want more. I want to document the trip in the best way I can and I think a laptop and a digital SLR camera are required.

Where we stand right now is that we'll have a small laptop and a small digital SLR camera.

There are so many considerations. Size and functionality are huge, but small things like common formats are important too. We're using SD memory cards and have a constraint of using devices that all use SD so we can swap then out easily.

We looked around quite a bit yesterday for computers and DSLR cameras. Here are the front-runners:

Fujitsu Lifebook P7010D

It's about 3 lbs, and has just about everything.

Pentax *ist DS

The pentax seems to be the smallest and lightest of the DSLRs (see the comparison in the link above).

Now, we're just starting to get serious about this, but these are some of the things we've seen that seem attractive.

Hey Lee -- I understand your desire to document, but I always find a pocket camera is best. Your most interesting shots will likely be close range (people, things) and I think that any benefit you get from a better camera is outweighed by not having a camera bag. Also, the ability to pull a camera inconspicuously in/out of your pocket makes for a less advertised travel experience. I with Sachiko on this one :-)

I hear ya Daniel- thanks for the comment. The jury is still out, but I'd love to be able to zoom and capture things I can't with the little one. You're making me think more... plus, cameras are expensive!
