TSA Locks

We went to REI today to start looking at some of the things we'll need. We got Sachi some shoes as she has foot problems and we need to special insoles made, etc.
Something we learned about is TSA locks. In traveling, you want to have a way to lock you bag's zipper. However, in the US and other developed places, there is often a need to search bags. Previously, the TSA would cut locks to be able to get into bags.
Now though, there is a standard type of lock that only the TSA can get into- and they don't have to cut the lock.
We plan to carry-on our bags (hopefully all the time) and I'm not sure these will matter internationally, but just in case, its good to know about these locks.

TSA still cuts them off. So I suggest when traveling in the US, don't use them or bring another set. I've had 2 sets cut off in the last 12 months! It may be cheaper to just use regular locks and replace when cut off.
Another really useful tip is to use cable ties to "lock" your bags. This discourages casual theft -- anybody who really wants something will get it anyway. I carry a zip lock back with a dozen of these. Just remember, have something to cut them off when you need the bag, and somthing that airlines allow. I can saw them off with my key.
