Take a Polaroid

I just heard a good piece of advice from a fellow conference participant about something to bring on the trip- a polaroid camera. I don't know if it will fit in the backpack too well, but I thought it was interesting.
The idea is that you have two cameras- the "good" camera and a polaroid. When you see someone you'd like to take a picture of, it's a good thing to be able to offer the person something- an offering for their time. As opposed to money, we could take a picture with the good camera and then take a polaroid picture to give the person. She said that it makes for an awesome gift that is fun and a great way to spread good will.
Now, we just need a lightweight pocket-sized polaroid camera. Thanks for the idea Karen!
When Anastasia and I were in Jamaica with my family a few years ago, she'd often take polaroids of people and give them the prints, and then take more photos with her 35mm. Kids in particuclar would really enjoy this and get excited about showing their folks their new pictures, or giving them as gifts to their friends / family. (You can see a few of Anastasia's 35mm from this trip here, here, and here.)
Polaroid pictures are also great if you plan to create scrapbook and/or photo albums of your trip. But, it is a whole other camera to carry.
Speaking from my experience being Anastasia's official camera gear carrier for a number of trips, I recommend you look into getting a backpack designed to carry camera gear. We have a nice, very small one, that doesn't even look like a gear bag, but it efficiently and securely holds 4-5 cameras (plus my audio recording gear).
